The Maltese Falcon - Autumn Winter 2014
"After a 17 year chase for the famous Maltese Falcon (a jewel encrusted statue) Mr. Gutman enlists the seductress, Miss O’Shaunassy, to get hold of
the falcon. Wanting protection, Miss O’Shaunassy travels with Floyd Thursby back to San Francisco, sending the Falcon by ship close behind. On
arrival in San Francisco, she recruits the help of detective Sam Spade to follow the now untrustworthy Thursby. In a series of mysterious events Miss
O’Shaunassy leads Detective Spade, Mr. Gutman and Mr. Cairo on a wild goose chase as they all race to retrieve the falcon for themselves. To throw
Spade of his scent she shoots his partner, Mr. Archer. Finally the package arrives on the La Paloma, much to Mr.Gutman's delight, only to find it is a fake! Miss O’Shaunassy has by now skipped town, with the real Maltese Falcon in her possession. After
removing the black enamel that was used to conceal the true worth of the statue, she sells jewels off the falcon to fund her luxurious adventures and
new life style heading towards the Amalfi Coast."
This collection was a collaborative project at Massey University with two of my classmates. We were set the task of creating a 2014 collection for the NZ brand Kate Sylvester. Our AW '14 collection was inspired by the 1930s novel, The Maltese Falcon, written by Dashiell Hammett. The collection
embodies the main character, seductress Miss O’Shaunassy, seen in the use of feminine fabrics such as silk and chiffon. Paired with masculine
elements, in the garments such as structure and tailoring. These are influenced by the detective Sam Spade from the story.
To appeal more to Kate Sylvester’s customer (a strong, attractive and intelligent woman) the end of the story was changed so Miss O’Shaunassy has a glamorous get away. This inspired the finer details in garments such
as the jewelled skirt, and sheer palazzo pants. The collection deems to empower Kate’s customer to express their inner femme fatale, it allows them to play with their femininity combined with masculine accents, as well as giving them moments of glamour. We designed a complete 10 look collection with only a few pieces actually being brought to life and constructed.
