Beneath Your Beautiful - Performance Exhibition 2013
For this project I was drawn to the idea of how people build emotional walls/barriers for their own protection against others. Whilst listening to the
song 'Beneath Your Beautiful' by Labrinth ft. Emeli Sande one day I was really inspired by some of the lyrics about trying to break down
someone's emotional barriers to see their inner beauty. I also found beauty in the lyric about an ivory tower; this reminded me of the fairytale,
Rapunzel. I looked into fashion shoots inspired by Rapunzel as a part of my research, and I also looked into the darker elements of emotional barriers,
in order to create a contrast and to really get a grasp of different people's barriers. My aim of this project was to show the contrasting elements
of tough emotional barriers with what is really hiding underneath, and how with the help and support by someone else these walls/barriers can
come down. I wanted to create a collection of pieces which deals with this issue to show people that it is ok to try and break down their
barriers or even let someone else in to help reveal the beauty that is hiding within, by using clothing as a visual.
To portray my idea through my designs I have used a tough cage structure layered over soft chiffon, lace and mesh. The outer layer represents the
toughest barriers, and is in a dark charcoal and made out of a thick wool blend fabric. The cage structure shows how people feel trapped, but also bulks up the silhouette and act as a supporting structure for the top layer. The under layers represent the beauty inside by being made from
chiffon, mesh and lace, and by being shades of nude/blush pink. With the inspiration from Rapunzel, the colour palette is neutral, pastel and
romantic underneath black/grey and dark brown. I have also explored techniques using tough material such as MDF, as well as burning the chiffon to show how people try to fix and mend their barriers as they get broken down. The final output is an outfit showing hard and soft fabric
contrasts in order to represent the idea of if you let people in emotionally, your barriers can gradually start to come down to reveal the true beauty
and innocence that has been there the whole time. This piece was designed to be part of a performance exhibition where people can interact with
the outfit by removing the layers themselves to discover what is underneath.
